Classified advertising is a form of advertising most commonly known in newspapers, periodicals, TV, radios and the internet. The ads may be charged or distributed free of charge. Typically, these ads in newspapers are short as they are charged per letter, line or column. As the name suggests, classified ads are classified into classes or categories. The following is a brief history of classified ads.
History of Classified Ads
Written advertising started with public notice craving as the oldest form of classified ads in 2000 BC. After that handwriting newssheets started as early as 206-220 BC.
Public poster ads started as the first handwritten notices in 15th century. Those posters were nailed on posts and walls in England.
The first newspaper ad was an announcement in 1704 in Boston. By the year 2007, about 6,580 daily newspapers in the world selling around 395 copies a day existed.
Online Classifieds started in 1995. Two new companies established this year; Craigslist & AdOne
Social classified like Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, and other platforms started their online platforms during the last decade.
